Dutch–Flemish SCS PhD Thesis Prize

Call for Nominations – First Edition (2026)

1. Introduction

The Dutch–Flemish Scientific Computing Society (SCS) is pleased to announce the launch of the Dutch–Flemish SCS PhD Thesis Prize.
This annual prize recognizes an outstanding PhD thesis in the broad area of scientific computing, numerical analysis, and related disciplines. The prize aims to highlight excellent research contributions and promote visibility within the Dutch–Flemish scientific community.

2. Award Description

The prize consists of:

  • Formal recognition by the Dutch–Flemish SCS,
  • An invitation to present the work at a SCS-related event.

The emphasis of the prize is on scientific excellence and recognition. When appropriate,
the winner may also be considered for nomination to international prizes.
The winner will be announced at the 50th Woudschoten Conference (October 1–2, 2026).

3. Eligibility

Candidates must satisfy the following criteria:

  • The PhD thesis must have been successfully defended within the eligibility period:

    June 16, 2024 – June 15, 2026
  • The doctoral degree must have been awarded by a Dutch or Flemish university. Joint and double doctoral degrees are also eligible, provided that at least one of the participating universities is based in the Netherlands or Flanders.
  • The PhD research must fall within the scope of scientific computing, numerical analysis,
    or closely related disciplines.

4. Nomination Process

Each university may submit at most one nomination. In exceptional and well-motivated cases, some flexibility in this rule may be granted based on the nomination letter.
A nomination package must include:

  • An electronic copy of the PhD thesis,
  • A nomination letter from one of the PhD supervisors,
  • Curriculum vitae of the candidate,
  • List of publications.

Optionally, at most two letters of support may be included in the package.

Nominations should be submitted electronically via email to numwisk@cwi.nl, using the subject line Nomination SCS Prize.
The deadline for submitting nominations is August 31, 2026 (23:59 CEST).

5. Selection Process

Committee

The winner will be selected by a small international committee composed of experts in
scientific computing and numerical analysis. Committee members may not evaluate candidates from their own institution or candidates whom they have directly supervised.

Assessment Criteria

The evaluation will be based on:

  • Scientific originality of the PhD work,
  • Mathematical and computational depth,
  • Impact and relevance of the research,
  • Quality of publications and dissemination.
